The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop “Reading in the Digital World – Innovative Journalism”

09 – 18 September 2019, Potsdam & Berlin, Germany

Deadline: 16 June 2019

The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop is part of the renowned annual international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. The workshop addresses a young generation of journalists and editors between the ages of 18 of 26 from Europe, the countries of the Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova), and Russia. In addition to the cultivation of practical and theoretical knowledge relating to journalistic work, the workshop also seeks to generate professional contacts and long-term ties among participants. It is often the first opportunity for our fifteen journalists from the countries of the Eastern Partnership to visit a Western European country. At the same time, the ten European journalists have often not known yet journalists from countries with limited freedom of speech. This fruitful exchange is an important factor, as it presents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn about the different conditions under which their fellow journalists from different political and social systems live and work. Close ties among the M100 alumni is maintained. Even several years later, most participants are still in contact on social media or meet in M100 alumni meetings. Some of the M100 alumni now work for successful independent European media, such as De Correspondent in the Netherlands or Hromadske.TV in Ukraine. Others have founded their own media organisations, such as the investigative network Correctiv or the international reporting platform Outriders. The workshop will be held in English. Costs for meals, accommodation and travel will be covered.

Topic 2019: “Reading in the Digital Age – Innovative Journalism”

The media industry around the world has gone through a period of unprecedented change and the debate on the future of print is hardly a novel idea. Digital developments have brought a new dimension to news content and delivery: from chat apps, data journalism to automation or VR journalism. The text-based model may have worked successfully for years in print, but digital journalism requires a new language and new ways of constructing narratives. At the same time, a strong emphasis on technology, distribution channels, the platforms, and their algorithms, might be at the expense of content and journalism’s core mission of transferring verifiable information. And as digital transformation enables internet users to have unlimited and quick access to information, journalism has lost its credibility and people are increasingly challenged to differentiate true information from misinformation or disinformation. The workshop “Reading in the Digital World – Innovation Journalism” aims to deal with different concepts of digital transformation within media organisations and to discuss the role of print in the digital news world. As technological developments pose new risks, limits of innovative and digital journalism will be discussed as well.

The M100YEJ workshop enables international and interdisciplinary networking of the participants from different European countries and therefore provides the unique possibility to initiate own cross-border media projects. To this end, the young journalists will have the opportunity to present their projects to potential funders that could serve as financing partners or provide feedback. At the end of the workshop the young journalists will attend the international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium in Potsdam, uniting Europe’s top editors, commentators and media owners alongside key public figures to assess the role and impact of the media in international affairs and to promote democracy and freedom of the press.
